‘iiNyanga Zonyaka’ — The Lunar Story Book — is a vinyl installation in the window of the atrium at The Norval Foundation in which Athi-Patra Ruga blurs the line between mythology and reality by presenting alternative tellings of history and a cosmological recounting of time. The light transports these counter-narratives to the viewer as it shines through the etchings on the windows. The experience is “like gazing into the South African rainbow and noticing the fracture, the distortion, the erasure, the violence, the fallacy, and the silences.”

The catalogue weaves images of the installation, preliminary sketches and complimentary poems and essays that explore ways of retelling history so that Black, femme, and queer narratives are at the core. The type setting echoes the non-linear structures of the poems and mimics themes of fracture and distortion. The outlined and manipulated text conveys a sense of an erasure and compliments the ghostly illustrations. The gradients imitate light pouring through the window installation.
